Coming soon to a TV near you: “Star Wars” the series?

You can thank “Damages” star Rose Byrne for this bit of exciting news: Casting is in the works for a “Star Wars” TV series.

Thanks, Rose!

Thanks, Rose!

During a press junket for “Knowing,” a thriller starring Nicholas Cage and Byrne, the actress let it slip that George Lucas et al. is actively scouting for actors for the series. (Remember, Byrne played Natalie Portman’s doppelganger in “Attack of the Clones.”)

“A lot of my friends have been auditioning for it,” she confirmed.

According to previously published reports, the program will take place in between “Revenge of the Sith” and the original “Star Wars” and will focus on minor characters from those films. Lucas reportedly will not consider a cable channel upon which to air it until a year’s worth of episodes have been written and shot.

In other words, don’t hold you breath – it’s going to be a while.

Apparently Byrne isn’t counting her eggs before they’re hatched, either, and says she’ll stick with FX’s “Damages.”

“I’m on a show,” she said. “I don’t know if I look that good in space.”
