Only in Jersey: 1/31/12

Welcome to the premiere edition of Only in Jersey!

What’s that? It’s a quick, concise rundown of breaking New Jersey-related entertainment news, brought to you by moi, a lifelong Jersey girl.

If it’s filming in Jersey, takes place in Jersey, or is about celebs from Jersey, I will cover it.

And, without any further ado, here are today’s items:

Susan Sarandon

Edison native Susan Sarandon, says The Hollywood Reporter, has been tapped to play Laura Linney’s friend in the upcoming season of Showtime’s “The Big C.”  Susan will play a cancer survivor who “uses her experience to inspire and motivate others” in a multi-episode arc when the show returns for a third season on Sunday, April 8.

JWOWW and Snooki

If MTV’s “Jersey Shore” stars Snooki and JWOWW want to film their spin-off series in the Garden State, they’re going to have to look somewhere other than Hoboken. TMZ reports the city’s mayor, Dawn Zimmer, says the Hoboken Film Commission voted unanimously against a film permit for 495 Productions. The mayor says the show would not only create more traffic and draw crowds but result in an “unacceptable lessening of the quality of life for the local residents and businesses.”

Steve Buscemi, left, and Michael Pitt in "Boardwalk Empire."

Atlantic City baddies Nucky Thompson and Jimmy Darmody are among Ask Men’s Top 10 “Famous Gangsters” list. The characters, from HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire,” rank 8 and 10, respectively, and are/were portrayed by Steve Buscemi (who on Sunday won a Screen Actors Guild Award) and Michael Pitt, a West Orange native. “Sopranos” protagonist Tony Soprano (played by Rutgers grad/Park Ridge native James Gandolfini) ranks third.
