“True Blood”: Let’s talk about sex, baby

“True Blood” is back and better than ever!

This show is truly bloody good fun!

After a lackluster second season (in my opinion, anyway), the HBO series has *vamped* things up considerably. I’m loving the dynamic duo team of Jason Stackhouse (Ryan Kwanten) and Andy Bellefleur (Chris Bauer), and the increased sexual tension between Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) and Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard) is nothing short of A-W-E-S-O-M-E. (Can’t wait for the show to delve further into the novels’ plotlines in that regard!)

“True Blood”: Sure it’s raw, but don’t call it rape

The September issue of Nylon features an interview with Sookie Stackhouse and her vampire lover, Bill Compton’s alter egos, Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer, as well as “True Blood” creator Alan Ball.

In it, Stephen and Anna talk about their steamy love scenes in the hit HBO series. What I found most interesting – and judging by the comments on the Huffington Post link, so does everyone else – is a comment made by Stephen in which he refers to Season 1’s sex-in-the-cemetery-mud scene as “rape.” Here’s his full quote:

“The thing about vampirism is that it taps into a female point of view – you have an old-fashioned gentleman with manners who is a f***ing killer… it’s an interesting duality, because in our present society it would be an odd thing for a woman to say, ‘I want my man to be physical with me.’ How, as a modern man, can you f***ing work that?”

OK, Stephen, I’m with you so far… But then he goes on to say this:

“It’s one thing to be polite and gentle… But when do you know it’s OK to crawl out of the mud and rape her [as Bill does in one scene]?… It’s difficult stuff for a bloke, but a vampire gets away with it…. I think that’s the attraction of the show – it’s looking back at a romantic time when men were men, but they were still charming.”

Since that’s one of the most memorable scenes in all of Season 1 – heck, I’ll go so far as to say it’s one of the most memorable “True Blood” scenes of all time – I most certainly do recall it. But I don’t think  Bill’s actions – and Sookie’s reaction (she was quite receptive, and I can totally understand why… after all, she thought he was stone cold dead) – constitute rape. It was fraught with passion, lust, anger, frustration… a whole host of emotions, but I wouldn’t call it rape.

Do you agree? I’d love to hear Alan Ball’s take on this.

“True Blood”: Are fans of the show reading the books?

Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello interviewed the “True Blood” cast at Comic-Con last week – including the intriguingly delicious threesome of Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer and Alexander Skarsgard. (That’s Sookie, Bill and Eric to you and me.)

While obviously they can’t reveal the direction in which their storylines are heading this season, I thought it was interesting that Eric – oops, I mean Alexander – questioned what fun it would be if the show simply followed the Charlaine Harris books verbatim.

And I absolutely was shocked when Bill (aka Stephen) pointed out that the books’ fans will only ever comprise about 5 percent of the “True Blood” viewership. Which made me wonder… why don’t all fans of the show read the books? That’s exactly how I got into the show: I watched the first season and loved it so much I had to know what was going to happen next! And for those of you who haven’t read the books, I strongly encourage you to do so… because you won’t believe what’s going to happen!

You can watch additional interviews with Michelle Forbes (Maryann) and Deborah Ann Woll (Jessica), creator Alan Ball, and Sam Trammell (Sam), Rutina Wesley (Tara) and Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette) right here.

“True Blood”: Meet the maenad

This clip from the new season of “True Blood” (which premieres June 14 on HBO) has been floating around online for a week. But this is the clearest, best quality version I’ve seen so far. Take a look:

What, you’re probably wondering, is that creature chasing Sookie? If creator Alan Ball follows Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse novels – and there’s no indication that he won’t, because he’s done a fantastic job thus far – then it’s most certainly a maenad.

What’s a maenad? Here’s Wikipedia to help out:

“In Greek mythology, maenads were the female followers of Dionysus, the most significant members of the Thiasus, the retinue of Dionysus. Their name literally translates as ‘raving ones.’ Often the maenads were portrayed as inspired by him into a state of ecstatic frenzy, through a combination of dancing and drunken intoxication. In this state, they would lose all self control, begin shouting excitedly, engage in uncontrolled sexual behavior, and ritualistically hunt down and tear animals (and sometimes men and children) to pieces, devouring the raw flesh. During these rites, the maenads would dress in fawn skins and carry a thyrsus, a long stick wrapped in ivy or vine leaves and tipped by a cluster of leaves, weave ivy-wreaths around their heads, and often handle or wear snakes.”

Will Bill come to Sookie’s rescue? Will she survive the attack? You know she will (we’ve got a bunch more books to get through!), but it won’t be pleasant.

“True Blood”: It’s getting hot in here

So earlier this week HBO announced that “True Blood” returns June 14. (Yippee!)

E Online posted a bunch of photos from the new season (including the one above, obviously). Thought you might like to drool along with me. Enjoy! And don’t forget, the first season DVD drops May 19.
