Only in Jersey: 3/7/12

It’s Wednesday! We’re halfway through the week, and it’s time for another edition of Only in Jersey!

If it’s filming in Jersey, takes place in Jersey, or is about celebs from Jersey, you will find it here.

Who would've thought of West Orange as "status symbol land"?

In the wake of Davy Jones’ untimely death last week, I’ve discovered at least two connections The Monkees have to the Garden State. First, I was very surprised to learn that one of their hit songs, “Pleasant Valley Sunday,’ was written about life in West Orange, of all places. Yup, that’s right: the tune, penned by Carole King and her then-husband, Gerry Goffin, was inspired by their time living on Pleasant Valley Way in the township’s Watchung Mountains. Kinda gives new meaning to the lyrics, huh?
The local rock group down the street
Is trying hard to learn their song
Serenade the weekend squire
Who just came out to mow his lawn

Another Pleasant Valley Sunday
Charcoal burning everywhere
Rows of houses that are all the same
And no one seems to care

See Mrs. Gray
She’s proud today
Because her roses are in bloom
Mr. Green
He’s so serene
He’s got a TV in every room

Another Pleasant Valley Sunday
Here in status symbol land
Mothers complain about how hard life is
And the kids just don’t understand

Creature comfort goals
They only numb my soul and make it hard for me to see
My thoughts all seem to stray to places far away
I need a change of scenery

The second Monkees/Garden State connection, which I recall but had forgotten, is that the band filmed the video for its ’86 comeback hit, “That Was Then, This Is Now,” at Great Adventure’s arena in Jackson. The song and video only feature Monkees Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork, although apparently Davy was part of the tour.

Snooki and Jionni: It's beyond puppy love. /Photo credit Splash News

Contrary to prior reports and her outright denial, The New York Post says that “Jersey Shore’s” lead meatball, Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, is in fact pregnant with boyfriend Jionni LaValle’s child. The newspaper says Snooki has been shopping exclusive rights to her offspring story to various tabloids, and Us Weekly won the bidding war. There is no word on when Us Weekly will go public with Snooki’s story, or how MTV plans on handling this bit of news since Snooki and Jenni “JWOWW” Farley are currently filming their untitled spinoff in Jersey City. “MTV went into crisis mode after they found out,” the Post quotes its source as saying. “They’re trying to hide it because it would greatly affect the creative direction of the show.” Will a pregnant, sober Snooki make for interesting television? That remains to be seen…

Jon Gosselin’s on Twitter: It’s the end of the world as I know it

Stop the world, I want to get off.  Jon Gosselin is on Twitter.

Naturally, I started following him as soon as I heard. Great. As if I haven’t already wasted enough time in the last six months following pretty much everything Jon and his bitter wife Kate have been saying about one another (most of which is not very flattering). Now one of my few Jon-and-Kate-free refuges has been infected, and you know darn right well I’ll be reading each and every one of Jon’s posts.

Sigh. But really, I guess it’s only fair. Jon has remained pretty close-mouthed… well, at least compared to Kate. Several weeks back he canceled an interview with E! Entertainment, which was never rescheduled. In the meantime, Kate has flapped her gums all over the place, including “Larry King Live” and another People cover story, both in the last week alone.

And, I feel the need to point out, Jon (thus far, anyway) isn’t using his tweets to put down/talk smack about his soon-to-be ex-wife. Instead, he’s so far focused solely on general comments about his time this weekend poolside in Vegas (surrounded by a bevy of babes… and his mom) and his children. His latest tweet?

“Definitely watch the show tonight and tell me how you like my red dress (thanks leah and alexis, daddy looks great)!”

While some might consider the above comment dull, I disagree. After months and months of animosity and anger (fueled once again by Kate’s latest comments to People that “Aliens have taken (Jon) away”), it’s refreshing to see Jon refrain from pettiness and focus instead on his children.

However, that doesn’t mean their TLC show should do the same. With all of the reports and rumors swirling in the press, I think it’s important “Jon & Kate Plus 8” morph to accommodate how the Gosselins’ lives have changed. They are not the same 10 people who started out doing a little slice-of-life show. Like it or not, they are celebrities (however loose the definition) and viewers want to know what their lives are like now. Avoiding or dancing around the issues – as distasteful as they may be – is not going to help viewers relate to them or want to watch.

Sometimes I wonder if TLC has ever heard the phrase “fiddle while Rome burns.”

One of the “Real Housewives” is pregnant

It doesn’t get much more real than this.

The highly anticipated fourth installment of Bravo’s “Real Housewives” series – set in my home state of New Jersey – hasn’t even aired yet, and now there is news that one of the women is in the family way.

Bravo

Jacqueline Laurita is expecting her third child this summer, reports People. Laurita, a former cosmetologist from Las Vegas, appeared at a press event Tuesday for the series and was visibly with child. She already has a 17-year-old daughter from a previous marriage and a 6-year-old son with her present husband.

We didn’t get to see too much of Jacqueline in the preview of the show Bravo aired recently. But in that brief time, she came across as the nicest of the five women and the peacemaker of the bunch. She is the sister-in-law of two of the other women, Dina Manzo and Caroline Manzo. Danielle Staub and Teresa Giudice also star.

Obviously, as the upcoming first season was filmed last summer, we won’t get to see Jacqueline pregnant. But if the show is picked up for a second season (and why wouldn’t it?), expect the birth to factor into the show in some way.

“The Real Housewives of New Jersey” premieres at 11 p.m. May 12.

Update: A real-life Jersey girl (that would be me – metiny1 born, bred and still resides) will blog live on Facebook beginning at 11 p.m. EDT Tuesday, May 12, during the premiere of Bravo’s “Real Housewives of New Jersey.” Come join me and share your thoughts as we meet these five women. Click here or look up my handle,  TV Blogger Ava Gacser, on Facebook. I look forward to seeing you!
