I may not have had an affair with my boss that blew up in my face, resulting in my being demoted and a very public meltdown, but I definitely can relate to Amy Jellicoe.
Amy (played by likable Laura Dern) is the heart of “Enlightened,” a thoughtful (and sometimes humorous) new HBO show which airs at 9:30 p.m. Mondays. (Media sources have dubbed it the “best show nobody’s watching,” and they say some very nice things about it.) Me, on the other hand – after catching up with the first three episodes On Demand – I’ve made it required viewing… at 9:30 p.m. Mondays. (Not sure how Nielsen-obsessed HBO is, but it can’t hurt, right?)
And in the spirit of “Enlightened” – it is 11/11/11, after all – I’ve chosen to come out as someone on a similar path of spiritual awareness and awakening.

Dr. Jennifer Melfi may have been primarily concerned with the health of her psychiatric patient, Tony Soprano, in ‘The Sopranos,” but her alter ego, actress Lorraine Bracco, has made her own health a top priority. And she has her late parents to thank for it.
Lorraine Bracco signed copies of her memoir, "On the Couch," during her appearance in Martinsville, NJ, on Feb. 19./ Photos by Ava Gacser
“I don’t want to put off anything until it’s too late like they did,” Lorraine confessed to a crowd of about 250 during a Somerset Medical Center program entitled “Talking about Your Heart!” held on Feb. 19 at the Martinsville Inn.
“I want to be healthy,” she said, adding that she quit smoking years ago. “I want to do whatever it takes me to enjoy my children and my future grandchildren.”
Lorraine lost both her mother and father to heart-related diseases within 11 days of one another in November 2010. That time – and the many months of illness leading up to it – was a “huge roller coaster ride” for her.

It’s been a while, crocodile.
A loooong while, actually, since I’ve written anything on this here blog. And believe me, it hasn’t been intentional. Life sometimes has the way of taking the wind out of my sails… not to mention the desire to write out of my very bones.
I don’t think words can adequately describe what I’ve been through over the past few months, though I’m going to attempt an explanation. Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with being offered a dream job covering television/entertainment for a major network or meeting the love of my life, marrying and starting a family.
Once upon a time, in a galaxy far, far away...We were a happy, healthy family./All photos by Ava Gacser
Back in the fall, my mother was diagnosed with bladder cancer.
